Officers shoot, kill suspect on Southern California freeway

CALABASAS, Calif. (AP) — An armed suspect who led officers on a high-speed chase has been fatally shot by officers during a standoff on a busy Southern California freeway.

California Highway Patrol Officer Peter Nicholson said both sides of U.S. 101 in Calabasas were shut down Saturday so authorities can investigate the matter.

Authorities said the pursuit began in Ventura County and ended near the Las Virgenes Road exit on southbound lanes of the freeway.

The Los Angeles County Fire Department tweeted that a suspect was pronounced dead shortly after noon and there were no reported injuries to officers.

It wasn’t known what led to the pursuit.

The freeway closure caused a traffic backup on both sides of the freeway.
