Officials: California man killed by deputy had fake gun

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Officials say a Northern California man killed by a sheriff’s deputy had a realistic-looking but fake handgun.

Sacramento County Sheriff’s Sgt. Tess Deterding said Monday that the deputy opened fire Sunday when a 55-year-old man reached for the handgun in his waistband.

It turned out to be a Glock style airsoft gun, which fires plastic projectiles.

Deterding says multiple callers reported that there was a suspicious man in the south part of the county, and one said he was known to carry weapons. She says the deputy found the man lying unresponsive in a ditch, but he soon awoke and began talking with the deputy.

She says the deputy gave the man verbal commands when he saw the weapon, then opened fire when the man reached for the gun.
