One-time rivals talk unity in race for California governor

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa are putting their rivalry behind them.

Once opponents in the race for California governor, the two Democrats made a show of unity Tuesday in downtown Los Angeles.

Newsom is headed for a November showdown with Republican John Cox.

Villaraigosa says he has no regrets about his loss in the June 5 primary election, and pledged to work tirelessly to elect his fellow Democrat.

He says their bitter campaign wasn’t personal.

There were hugs and handshakes.

Newsom says “you look forward, you don’t look back.”
