Panel finds 12 LA officers out of policy in fatal shooting

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Civilian overseers of the Los Angeles Police Department have found officers violated rules on use of lethal force in a barricade situation where a man firing a gun was fatally shot by SWAT officers in a helicopter.

The Los Angeles Times reports the Police Commission voted 3-1 in closed session this week to find 12 officers out of policy. One officer was found to be in policy during the May 8, 2017, shooting in the Sunland area.

The Times says the reasoning was unclear, but an inspector general’s report is due out shortly.

The decision contradicted Police Chief Charlie Beck, who found all aspects of the shooting were in policy.

The police union says the officers should have been thanked instead of rebuked.
