Parolee dies in back of Sacramento police wagon

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Police in Northern California say a parolee died in a Sacramento police wagon while in route to jail.

The Sacramento Police Department says the man, identified as a black person in his 30s, was in the custody of parole agents who requested a marked Sacramento police vehicle transport him to jail on Wednesday.

The department says an officer took the man, “who was handcuffed and laying on the floor,” into the rear of his patrol wagon while a state Department of Corrections agent followed them in his vehicle.

It says that when the officer parked in the jail entry and checked on the man, he was unresponsive.

Officials say the officer and the parole agent administered CPR and that the man was taken to a local hospital, where he died.
