Pioneering director Lina Wertmüller to finally get her Oscar
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Italian filmmaker Lina Wertmüller is finally getting her Oscar 42 years after breaking ground as the first woman ever to be nominated for best director.
Wertmüller is being celebrated Sunday by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at the 11th annual Governors Awards along with Wes Studi and David Lynch.
She is still only one of five women to ever be nominated for the best director award.
The 91-year-old filmmaker is making the rounds in Los Angeles with events celebrating her life and career, which has produced films like “The Seduction of Mimi,” ”Swept Away” and the Oscar-nominated “Seven Beauties.”
The day after the Governors Awards, Wertmüller will get another honor as well: A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
