Police: Gunman lured firefighters to retirement home

LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Authorities have arrested a 77-year-old man they believe lured firefighters to a Southern California retirement home in order to shoot them.

Thomas Kim was arrested Monday on suspicion of murder after a Long Beach firefighter was killed and a second was grazed.

Police Chief Robert Luna says it appears that Kim set a fire with the intention of getting firefighters to show up.

Investigators are still trying to determine a motive for the attack.

Authorities say firefighters responded to reports of an explosion at the 11-story Covenant Manor facility.

Fire Chief Michael DuRee says firefighters extinguished a fire and were searching the building when shots rang out. Capt. Dave Rosa was shot. He died Monday at a hospital.
