Report: Settlement in claim against UCLA Health gynecologist

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Records show University of California regents last month finalized a $2.25 million settlement with a patient who alleged sexual assault by a UCLA Health gynecologist.

The Los Angeles Times reports UCLA released a redacted copy of the settlement on Monday.

The allegation involves a woman’s 2018 appointment with Dr. James M. Heaps, who has pleaded not guilty to sexual battery of two patients, including the woman who received the settlement.

Heaps’ attorney, Tracy Green, says his treatments were always medically necessary.

UCLA also released a nearly $1.3 million settlement with a nurse practitioner who claimed sexual harassment and retaliation by Heaps for participating in the investigation.

Green says Heaps only sent her a text asking if she was OK after he realized she was no longer working at UCLA Health.
