San Diego homeowner shoots intruder breaking door

SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego police say a resident shot and wounded a man who was yelling and using a rock to pound on a door of his home.

A police statement says the incident happened shortly before 3 a.m. Tuesday in the Alta Vista neighborhood.

The homeowner reported hearing a commotion outside and noticed motion-detector lights go on.

He then saw a man pick up rocks from a flower bed, walk to the front door and start yelling and pounding with such force that glass in a security door shattered.

Police say the homeowner got a gun, yelled that he had armed himself and fired through the door when the intruder continued to yell and pound. The man fled but was found nearby and hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Names were not released.
