San Diego man sentenced for killing woman found in suitcase

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A San Diego man who raped and killed a co-worker, then stuffed her body into a suitcase has been sentenced to life in prison without chance of parole.

A judge issued the sentence Friday for Joshua Palmer and said she was troubled by his lack of remorse, although Palmer did read a statement asking the victim’s friends and family to forgive him.

Palmer was convicted of first-degree murder for strangling 21-year-old Shauna Haynes two years ago.

Her body was found in a suitcase in a trash can behind Palmer’s downtown apartment building.

Prosecutors say Palmer attacked Haynes after she refused to have sex with him but did have sex with others at his apartment.

Palmer claimed he had consensual sex with the woman but didn’t explain her death.
