Searchers find body of man swept away in California river

HANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Searchers have found the body of a man who was swept away by the roaring Kings River in central California.

The Kings County Sheriff’s Office says 31-year-old Jose Luis Gomez sank when he jumped in the river with a pool raft around 2 a.m. Saturday near Stratford.

The Fresno Bee reports Gomez’s cousin attempted to jump in to help him, but he almost got swept away too. The cousin then called authorities.

A water rescue team found Gomez’s body Saturday afternoon.

Officials have cautioned residents against jumping into area rivers due to fast-moving currents.
