Sexual harassment claim withdrawn in California House race

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A woman who accused a Southern California Democratic congressional candidate of sexual harassment has withdrawn the claim, saying it was a misunderstanding.

The announcement by Gil Cisneros’ campaign followed a barrage of Republican-backed ads in the 39th District spotlighting the accusation.

Former state Assembly candidate Melissa Fazli said in May that Cisneros made sexually suggestive comments to her at a Democratic state convention and during a later phone call.

After meeting this weekend, Fazli and Cisneros said in a joint statement Monday that it was a misunderstanding.

In an interview Tuesday, Fazli says the ads used “massive dramatic licensing” and misrepresented what she had said.

Cisneros faces Republican Young Kim in a November race widely considered a toss-up. The district includes parts of Orange, Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties.
