Southern California entering first heat wave of the summer

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern California is warming up in the first significant heat wave of the season following an early summer marked by June Gloom that carried on into July.

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory for a long swath of the region Friday morning and will keep it in effect until Sunday night.

High temperatures are expected to reach from the mid-90s (35 Celsius) into the 100-degree (37.8-Celsius) in many valley and mountain areas.

The desert areas southeast of Los Angeles are under an excessive-heat warning.

The rest of the state is also warming but there are no advisories or warnings. Meteorologists, however, say there will be a moderate level of heat risk in the San Joaquin Valley on Saturday.
