Stun-gunned California man dies after struggle with deputies

MILLBRAE, Calif. (AP) — Authorities are investigating the death of a man who was shocked with a stun gun while struggling with deputies in Northern California.

Thirty-six-year-old Chinedu Valentine Okobi of Redwood City died Wednesday after he stopped breathing while in custody. The San Mateo County coroner’s office is investigating his death.

The Sheriff’s Office says Okobi was spotted running in and out of traffic in Millbrae, near San Francisco, and attacked an arriving deputy. Four more deputies were called and at least one shocked him with a Taser.

Okobi died at a hospital.

The deputy he assaulted was treated at the hospital and released.

All five deputies have been placed on paid leave pending an investigation.
