Suspect pleads not guilty in 2016 death of toddler
BROCKTON, Mass. (AP) — A California man charged with murder in the death of his girlfriend’s 2-year-old son in Massachusetts has pleaded not guilty.
Timy Jo Griffin, of Long Beach, California, was held without bail at his arraignment Thursday.
Prosecutors say the toddler, Nazeir Phillips, was found unresponsive in the Brockton home in December 2016 with severe brain injuries and died at the hospital three days later.
The boy was the son of Griffin’s then-girlfriend.
The 24-year-old Griffin told investigators the boy had a tantrum during a diaper change, fell off his bed and hit the back of his head on a rail.
Griffin returned to California while the boy was still in the hospital.
His attorney, John Geary, said his client has nothing to hide and has been in constant contact with Massachusetts authorities.
