The Latest: Women held after LA Police Commission disruption

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Latest on two women who disrupted a Los Angeles Police Commission meeting (all times local):

5:15 p.m.

Two women have been arrested after authorities say they disrupted a Los Angeles Police Commission meeting and one threw what may have been human ashes at the police chief.

Police tell City News Service that Sheila Hines-Brim was arrested Tuesday for misdemeanor battery on a police officer after she allegedly threw a powdery substance toward Chief Charlie Beck and some reached him.

The woman is an aunt of Wakiesha Wilson, who died in police custody two years ago, and police say as she walked away, Hines-Brim shouted: “That’s Wakiesha.”

Police say the meeting was adjourned and a hazardous materials team determined the powder wasn’t dangerous but the material will undergo further testing.

The other woman, Melina Abdullah, also was arrested for misdemeanor battery on a police officer.

Two women were detained when one of them allegedly threw a powdery substance in the direction of LAPD Chief Charlie Beck during a raucous meeting of the Los Angeles Police Commission.

City News Service reports Tuesday that one of the women is Sheila Hines-Brim, aunt of Wakiesha Wilson, who died while in police custody two years ago.

Some witnesses reported Hines-Brim threw some of Wilson’s ashes toward Beck during the public meeting. But others said the ashes were merely placed in front of the chief. Hines-Brim shouted “that’s Wakiesha” as she walked away.

The meeting was immediately recessed when the powder was released. The room was cleared and investigators worked to identify the substance. Officials didn’t immediately say what it was.

No injuries were reported and no evacuations were ordered.
