Trump, impeachment could loom large in Sen. Collins’ race
LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — Republican Sen. Susan Collins faces a well-funded Democrat and criticism from women’s groups over her vote for Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanagh.
But the 66-year-old Maine senator’s biggest hurdle may be the president of her own party.
President Donald Trump’s potential impeachment presents a distinct dilemma for the centrist. Siding with the president would inflame Democrats. Voting to impeach him would anger Republicans.
Collins is mum on impeachment as she prepares for a formal announcement later this fall on whether she’ll seek a fifth term.
She tells The Associated Press that she would run her own race as she always has, regardless of who’s at the top of the ticket.
