Trump visits Michigan as Republicans confront ominous signs
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) — West Michigan has been very good to Donald Trump, helping deliver him to the White House in 2016 with a victory in a blue state he wasn’t supposed to win.
But as Trump returns to Grand Rapids on Thursday night for a rally that will celebrate the completion of Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation, there’s cause for Republicans to worry.
The historically Republican turf surrounding Grand Rapids in Kent County has seen a rise of Democratic activism and electoral success since Trump took office.
Trump campaign officials acknowledge they face a battle holding states like Michigan that swung away from Democrats in 2016.
But they say having Trump atop the ticket “moves people and moves numbers.” Local party faithful are gearing up to help him win again in 2020.
