Trump’s fake accent angers Asian Americans as they veer left
President Donald Trump recently angered many Asian Americans when he reportedly mocked the accents of two Asian heads of state.
It comes as a growing and crucial voting bloc of Asian Americans voters is leaning further to the left.
The U.S. Census Bureau says the Asian American voting-age population has more than doubled in the last two decades, leaping from 4.3 million in 1998 to 11.1 million in 2018. A majority of those new voters lean Democratic.
A Pew Research Center survey says 53% of Asian registered voters in 1998 identified with the Democratic Party. That figure rose to 65% in 2017.
Natalie Masuoka, a UCLA associate professor of political science and Asian American studies, says even some Asian ethnic groups that had leaned Republican have shifted Democratic.
They also could become a tipping factor in swing states.
