Uber driver charged with kidnapping passengers for sex

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — A California Uber driver has been arrested and charged with trying to kidnap two passengers to have sex with them.

Authorities say 23-year-old Gebrele Amare was arrested last Thursday. It’s unclear whether he has a lawyer.

Amare picked up a woman in Berkeley on May 2. Authorities allege he refused to let her leave, later telling police he planned to have sex with her and then “pimp” her. Police say she threw herself from the moving car.

Amare’s also accused of touching the thigh of a 17-year-old girl he picked up in Oakland that morning, locking the doors and letting her out only after she threatened to break a window.

Uber spokesman Andrew Hasbun calls the allegations deeply troubling and says Amare’s Uber driver access was removed the same day.
