West Hollywood mayor cedes position amid sex harass claims
WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. (AP) — The mayor of West Hollywood has resigned his title for health reasons in the midst of sexual harassment allegations.
The Los Angeles Times says John Duran announced Monday he’s relinquishing the largely ceremonial position. However, he’ll remain on the City Council.
The council can’t oust him but it could censure him at Monday night’s meeting.
Duran says his decision was based on health issues. He was recently hospitalized for blood clots.
Protesters have been demanding his ouster from the council over the sex harassment allegations.
Three current or former members of the Gay Men’s Chorus of Los Angeles have alleged that Duran improperly touched them or made crude sexual comments.
Three years ago, the city paid $500,000 to settle a sexual harassment lawsuit brought by Duran’s former council deputy.
