Women cite ‘grass ceiling’ in male-dominated weed industry

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Women have made inroads in the male-dominated cannabis business. But they still face a so-called grass ceiling as the industry grows and becomes more mainstream.

Because the legal marijuana industry is so new, and so far limited to nine states, there isn’t much data on women or other minorities in leadership roles.

But because the industry is so new, women see opportunities to mold it and create their own spaces within it.

Massachusetts, one of the states with broad legalization, plans a study breaking down license holders by race and gender and looking at possible barriers to getting into the industry. Licensing in that state is expected to start this summer.
