Women detained after powder is thrown at LA police chief

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Two women were detained when one of them allegedly threw a powdery substance in the direction of LAPD Chief Charlie Beck during a raucous meeting of the Los Angeles Police Commission.

City News Service reports Tuesday that one of the women is Sheila Hines-Brim, aunt of Wakiesha Wilson, who died while in police custody two years ago.

Some witnesses reported Hines-Brim threw some of Wilson’s ashes toward Beck during the public meeting. But others said the ashes were merely placed in front of the chief. Hines-Brim shouted “that’s Wakiesha” as she walked away.

The meeting was immediately recessed when the powder was released. The room was cleared and investigators worked to identify the substance. Officials didn’t immediately say what it was.

No injuries were reported and no evacuations were ordered.
