Inmate found dead at downtown San Diego Central Jail

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – An inmate was found dead in his cell Thursday at the downtown San Diego Central Jail.

The death at the Front Street detention center was discovered about 1:30 p.m., sheriff’s spokeswoman Melissa Aquino said.

Authorities put the facility into lockdown for about an hour while determining the circumstances of the fatality.

Homicide detectives will investigate, as is standard protocol in such cases, Aquino said.

The inmate’s name was withheld pending notification of his family.
