Interstate 15 closing overnight Tuesday for transit construction project

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – A section of the Interstate 15 in Mid-City is scheduled to close Tuesday night for concrete paving and won’t reopen until Wednesday morning.

From 7 p.m. Tuesday to 5 a.m. Wednesday, all Northbound lanes of I-15 between the I-805 and the I-8 will be closed, according to Caltrans.

Detour signs will be posted routing motorists to the I-805 North, then to SR-163 North before reconnecting to I-15 North.

Closures include:

  • NB on-ramps at University Avenue, El Cajon Boulevard and Adams Avenue
  • NB on-ramp from I-15 to I-8 / Camino Del Rio South
  • NB on-ramp from I-805 to I-15

Motorists will still have access to University Avenue, El Cajon Boulevard, and Adams Avenue via the I-805.

The closures are due to a project in the works by Rapid, a transit system for San Diego. A transit-only lane on the I-15 and two transit stations will be created, which will improve timeliness and alleviate connection problems for riders.

Scheduled closures can be expected until the project is completed in 2017.
