Jersey Mike’s City Game of the Week: Christian Patriots 31, Point Loma Pointers 21

The Week 10 Jersey Mikes City Game of the Week had everything you could ask for in a high profile match up. The bleachers were packed with Point Loma fans to watch their Pointers take on the Christian Patriots in the school’s last game under portable lights. On the other side with Christian putting perfection on the line, this game could not disappoint no matter the outcome. Fortunately, the outcome was well worth the hype.

Christian came off the bus ready to go. Wide receiver Benjamin Goodwin showed off his throwing arm with a 29 yard throw right into the end zone for Ethan Contreras. Point Loma wouldn’t accept being down for long though; running back Josh Ball bullied his way through the Patriot defense to set up a short touchdown run by Matthew Fa’alele. Christian would keep the back and forth battle going thanks to Benjamin Goodwin going back to doing what he does best and catching a 48 yard score from quarterback Brad Jeremiah. That made it three touchdowns on the first three possessions of the game with Christian up 14-7.

So how would the second quarter start? Yet another touchdown when Pointer’s quarterback Kyle Grady found Ken Watson from 29 yards out. With the game tied at 14 Christian answered with, you guessed it, a touchdown. Brad Jeremiah then threw for his second score of the night by getting his star running back Joey Morones involved in the passing game. Their connection  gave the Patriots a 21-14 lead, after that both sides finally would make some defensive stops to keep that score the same heading into halftime.

A slow second half picked up in the fourth quarter thanks to Point Loma’s Kyle Grady running in for 6 to cut the Patriot lead to 7. Chaos erupted from there when Christian’s Jesse Matthews made a heads up play to recover the ensuing onside kick. Joey Morones immediately coughed the ball up the next play, but Christian’s defense was able to hold Point Loma for four straight downs. Christian ended a clock killing drive with a field goal, making this final score 31-21 in favor of the Patriots.

There may have been plenty of great offensive performances from both sides, but this week’s Jersey Mikes City Game of the Week MVP goes to a player who contributed much more than the stat sheet tells you. It’s been a while since the award went to a lineman, but defensive end Garrett Rosenthal was a critical part of Christian’s ability to make stops when it counted. He added in a sack and a very important tackle for a loss; the sophomore definitely deserves credit for this Patriot teams unblemished season.

Christian looks to hit the big 10-0 in next week’s home contest against the Mission Bay Buccaneers. While anything can happen in high school football, the Patriots have to be the favorites. This squad has won every single on of their games by double digits. Point Loma is still very much alive in the race for the CIF Division 1 Tournament. A home game against the St Augustine Saints will determine where they end up. Tune in next week to Prep Pigskin Report, Fridays at 10:30 PM to see how this year’s regular season comes to a finish!

PREVIEW – In the Jersey Mike’s City Game of the Week, the Point Loma Pointers are hungry to make a statement in front of their homecoming crowd by ending the Christian Patriots bid for perfection.

This could very well be Christians best squad in the school’s successful history. The 8-0 Patriots are neck in neck with Bishop’s for the top seed in the CIF Division 3 playoffs. One thing that makes high school football special are the unbelievable numbers players put up. Running back, Joey Morones is a perfect example of that. His two scores on the ground and a long touchdown catch led the way in a 61-7 win over Scripps Ranch. That puts Morones at 23 total touchdowns on the season with at least 3 games to play! Christian is definitely not a one dimensional team, safeties Tshombre Carter and Ethan Contreras.

To keep a perfect year intact they need a road win against a Point Loma team that has a lot on the line. The Pointers are right in the middle of the Division 1 standings, who knows how far the result of Friday’s game will rise or drop them. They’ve struggled in the toughest part of their schedule, a four game stretch against some of San Diego’s toughest teams. Tough losses to Madison and Cathedral Catholic dropped Point Loma to 4-4, but this team can’t be counted out. The rushing duo of Josh Ball and Antonio Quintanilla have turned heads all season, and defensive end Patrick Rutledge is a threat to get to the quarterback every down.

There’s only two weeks left until playoff time, tune in to Prep Pigskin Report to see how another exciting year of prep football comes to an end!
