Week 8 Jersey Mike’s City Game of the Week: Mira Mesa Marauders 33, University City Centurions 30

Well well well… what a fantastic Friday night football game all around. It was the 2018 Homecoming game for the Marauders of Mira Mesa High School. Both teams fought, yet both teams could have played a cleaner football game around the edges. The final score in this one was 33 – 30 Marauders in a neck n neck contest.

455… that is the amount of points that UC and Mira Mesa have combined for scoring points this season. In this one, they combined for another 63.

The Jersey Mike’s City Game of the Week was a sandwich battle decided by a game winning field goal.

Sophomore Daniel Domingo came through when Mira Mesa needed him most. “I was doubting myself before hand, which I don’t think you should do that . When you believe in yourself 100% and execute that is how you get things in life” said Domingo.

Daniel Domingo sent the pigskin through the uprights with 4 seconds left in the game. The Marauder kicker put the first points up on the board for Mira Mesa.

The Centurions do not always have the same number of troops that opposing football teams have; however that has nothing to do with how much heart they bring to the table. Gunnar Gray to Casey Granfors was a problem for Mira Mesa all night long scoring two touchdowns in the first half.

At halftime, the score was 17 – 12 Marauders. On an eleven play drive, Noah Tumblin found Josh Poston on fourth down making it 24 – 12.

The next drive for the Centurions started on their own 38 and in five plays Gray took it in himself from 2 yards out. The PAT no good gives us a 24-18 score with 4 minutes left in the 3rd Quarter.

A possible play of the week from Tumblin to Lemon on a snap that was not handled right off the bat. The agile QB scooped it up, scrambled left and found a man in the end zone butt naked with nobody around him. This makes the game 30 – 18.

University City had the ball to start the fourth down by 12. Gray found Jimmy Galindo in the end zone after a 10 play drive. The failed 2 point conversion makes it 30 – 24.

With 6:08 left in the game, Tumblin and the Marauder offense trying to kill the clock could not handle the snap on back to back plays. The Centurion offense was given a chance as the ball was recovered by Anthony Rodriguez.

After Gray finds Granfors in the end zone with 3:13 left from 27 yards out.. The main focus was to stop the man named Noah Tumblin who planned to have the last possession.  A ten play drive set the Marauders up with a Field Goal opportunity by Daniel Domingo from 27 yards out. Right down the middle.

PREVIEW:

In Week No. 8, under the Friday Night Lights at Mira Mesa High School, the Marauders will face off against the visiting Centurions from University City High School in the Jersey Mike’s City Game of the Week.

University City comes into this game 4-2, yet 1-2 on the road, as they have yet to play an Eastern League opponent.

Mira Mesa is also 4-2 thus far on the year. The Marauders are split at 2-1 in home and away games after losing in Week 7 to Christian High School.

The head coach for the Centurions is Ryan Price. The head coach for the Marauders is Chris Thompson.

The Centurions like to move the ball on offense and plan to do just that against the Marauders defense. In the early-season win over Valhalla High School, Grey to Granfors proved he is the real talk. E’Lonie Rico runs hard and keeps his feet quick. He is tough to stop on the quick check down with space. The defense should not forget about Tariq Jefferson, either.

The Marauders also have the capability to move the pigskin efficiently. Leading the charge on offense is Noah Tumblin and Albert Lemon via the air. Elijah Lynch, the lead back for the Marauders, has nine touchdowns on the season.

Javelle Brown leads the team in all-purpose yards. Junior defensive back/athlete Elijah Thomas leads the team in total tackles and tied with three others on the team in sacks. Marcus Dean comes into this week with four interceptions.

This in conference matchup should be a good one this Friday night. This Eastern League battle you will want to watch. Especially the highlights.
