La Jolla Children’s Pool closed for pupping season

LA JOLLA (KUSI) – The Children’s Pool in La Jolla is closed for the next five months for the harbor seal pupping season.

It’s part of a 10-year agreement between city leaders, seal advocates and the California Coastal Commission that aims to provide harbor seals with a protected place to bear and rear their pups.

Many residents are critical of the closures and want access to a beach that is safe for children.

From Dec. 15 through May 15, the public is not allowed to walk on the beach for fear of disturbing the seals. The annual pupping season closures are expected to remain in place for the next 10 years, until 2029.
