La Jolla clinic registered nurse pleads guilty to replacing painkillers with saline solution
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – A registered nurse from a La Jolla clinic pleaded guilty Thursday to siphoning off a generic form of the painkiller Demerol and replacing them with saline solution.
Sarah Elizabeth Martin, 25, was employed at the clinic from last October through March 24.
Martin admitted that she removed the drug from the vials with a syringe and the glued the caps back on to avoid suspicious.
According to court papers, the adulterated drugs were administered to between 50-250 patients at the clinic.
Prosecutors said there is no evidence to show that any of the patients were harmed.
Martin has agreed to make restitution to the clinic for the cost of the adulterated drugs and to successfully complete six months of residential drug treatment.
She is scheduled to be sentenced August 21.
