La Jolla Country Day 61, Maranatha Christian 21
La Jolla Country Day announced its presence in the Division V bracket with a dominating 61-21 win over Maranatha Christian.
The fifth-seed Torreys advance to a second-round matchup with number one Holtville, who posted a 34-26 victory over Calvary Christian.
While recent University of Arizona commit Braxton Burmeister directed the La Jolla Country Day attack, he was joined by a platoon of Torrey playmakers. Cole Goldklang opened the scoring with a 51-yard touchdown run, and followed a 6-yard endzone plunge from Burmeister by turning a a short screen pass into a 74-yard touchdown.
The defense more than held down their end of the bargain. Two-way standout Darien Brown collected two interceptions, including a pick-6 just before the half for a 38-0 lead at the break.
Maranatha scored first in the third quarter, on a five-yard pass from Christian Cortes to Isaac Schwan. But the Eagles couldn’t stem the Torrey tide.
Later in the quarter, Goldklang found a third way to get the ball into the endzone. After a safety on a sack by Casey Mariucci forced a Maranatha free kick, Goldklang returned it 64 yards to put Country Day up 61-7.
The final margin closed at 61-21, sending the Torreys into their semifinal matchup with Holtville.
