La Playa piers get backing from Port of San Diego Commissioners

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The Port of San Diego Commissioners have sided with Shelter Island residents who want to save the piers that extend into the Shelter Island Yacht Basin.

The port’s commissioners, in a 6-1 majority decision, chose to change the language of a draft planning document to allow the La Playa Piers to remain as is, meaning in their existing public-private state.

The decision follows  opposition from Point Loma residents who advocated for the historic value of the piers.

The next step is to seek certification from the California Coastal Commission.
