Landmark coffee shop catches fire in Coronado

CORONADO (KUSI) – First responder crews are investigating the fire that burned the inside of Clayton’s Coffee in Coronado.

The shop has been a staple in Coronado for 80 years.

The fire was spotted by people walking by the shop by passerbys at about 1:30 A.M. and once the Fire Department showed up, they were able to stop the fire from spreading.

“It was a little bit of a complex scenario, it’s an older building,” said Battalion Chief Jason Summers of the Coronado Fire Deartment. Many older buildings don’t have an updated sprinkler system, he says. “We’re very fortunate someone called us in, it could have potentially been much worse.”

It’s not known the cause of the fire or how badly the interior was burned.
