Last major search day for Sally Estabrook
JULIAN (CNS) – Search-and-rescue teams fanned out around the Pinezanita RV Park and Campground in Julian again Sunday in hopes of locating a 75-year-old woman with Alzheimer’s disease who went missing in the area one week ago.
Sally Estabrook apparently wandered away from the 26.5-acre campground in the 4400 block of state Route 79, north of Harrison Park Road, while her husband was showering around 4 p.m. on Oct. 4, according to a sheriff’s department statement. She was reported missing by her husband a short time later, the statement said.
Volunteer search-and-rescue personnel began combing the area that afternoon and each day since, turning up no sign of Estabrook. Sheriff’s officials received a report of a possible sighting last week, but it did not pan out.
Estabrook’s son-in-law, Dave Mustaine, is frontman of the thrash-metal band Megadeth. At news conference on Friday, Mustaine asked hospital, shelter and assisted living home employees to make sure Estabrook hadn’t ended up at one of the facilities, it was reported.
“We’re just asking everybody that may have been up there to take a look in your sheds, in your garages, in the thick brush around your house,” Mustaine said. “A lot of times people that wander who have Alzheimer’s are found very close to their homes. They just take shelter underneath bushes.”
Around 100 volunteers have been searching an about five-mile radius around the campground, and another 50 searchers could be added to the efforts on Sunday, it was reported.
Estabrook is white, 5 feet 4 inches tall and about 145 pounds, with shoulder-length blond hair. She may be wearing a teal top and white Capri pants.
She is not very communicative but may respond to her name, according to sheriff’s officials, who urged anyone spotting a woman matching her description to call 911.
