Leslie Lopez Weather Discussion – Tuesday, August 5, 2014

So long, muggy days!! Things sure have changed in a hurry – at least when talking about humidity! Today we saw a huge drop in relative humidity. Yesterday at 6 a.m. our RH for the local mountains was at 96%. This morning at the same time our RH dropped to 11%.

The reason for this change is a low pressure system hovering over California, pushing away the monsoonal moisture up to the Northeast. The satellite-radar is nicely showing a section of the Southwest being cleared by this low, with a whole lot of monsoonal moisture up to the North.

This drier weather pattern will cause our mornings to be cooler. The warm, humid air mass kept us insulated during the mornings, but since that has retreated, the drier morning air will be several degrees cooler. Areas of patchy fog are also expected, along with a thicker marine layer. Although we start out our mornings cool, the afternoons this week are expected to be warm and clear.

Expect this to last until Friday when a ridge of high pressure brings in further warming followed by another round of monsoonal moisture for Monday and Tuesday. Mountains and deserts at this point have a slight chance for rain and thunderstorms early next work week.
