Lincoln High rallies in support of new interim principal

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) — There was a celebratory mood at Lincoln High School Friday as students, teachers and staff congratulated the principal for whom they had publicly advocated for for weeks.

The school threw a support rally before classes Friday morning to celebrate popular former Vice Principal Jose Soto-Ramos who was promoted Tuesday to interim Principal by the San Diego Unified School District.

The fact that it was an “interim” position was a non-issue for everyone gathered — confident that Soto will prove himself in getting the job permanently.

There was contention earlier this month at the fact that Soto wasn’t even being considered for the position. There was a student walkout, followed by a faculty rally.

“Its rare when everyone comes together the fact that it happened, we have to appreciate it and carry it on,” Lincoln teacher Larry Thurman said.

There was praise for Marten too, for keeping an open mind and coming to Lincoln to listen to the community.

“Another note most people think high school students don’t think, behind i Pads and social media, not the case here,” student Antonio Barrera. “It’s unbelievable, we got what we wanted, what was right. I’m really excited I’m going to be a senior right man right job.”

Soto remained behind the scenes during the weeks of turmoil over who should be the high school’s new principal.

“I do have a sense of pride because this is about empowering everyone, advocating for something stand for something,” Soto said. “A student said this is the right fit, at the end of the day, right fit, someone who is going to advocate for them.”
