Hilltop Lancers 28, Lincoln Hornets 19

The Hilltop Lancers escaped with a 28-19 victory after withstanding a furious comeback attempt by the pesky Lincoln Hornets. Early on it appeared as if the Hornets would be dictating the pace of the game as they methodically moved the ball on the opening drive of the game that culminated in a rushing touchdown.

However, that score would be the Hornets’ last until the fourth quarter. Hilltop High School, refusing to be denied on homecoming night, regrouped and put together some long drives to take the lead back. The most impressive of which led to a touchdown with two seconds left in the half. In the third quarter homecoming king runner-up, Dylan Trenga, caught a long bomb by Alex Tejada and followed that up with a 25 yard run that put the Lancers up 28-7.

Standout running backs Micah Edwards and La tre Jacquess would not let their team go quietly reeling off long and physical runs in rapid succession to bring their Hornet squad back into contention. The Hornets scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter and were about to make it a one score game when the Lincoln coach made a curious decision and opted to go for two. The Hornets failed on their attempt and the remaining nine point deficit was too much for Lincoln High school to overcome.

Hilltop High School improved to 3-4 and is slated to play Mater Dei next week while Lincoln High School face a must win game against a stout Mira Mesa squad.

The (2-4) Hilltop Lancers host the (2-4) Lincoln Hornets as each squad attempts to inch closer to .500 and get into the playoff mix. The season has taken a turn for the worst for the two schools after they each started the season 2-1 respectively. Hilltop high school in particular has had some excruciating losses including losing 19-17 to Bishop High School.

Both teams prefer to attack on the ground which should make for a low scoring old school football game. The Lancers are led by Senior running back Dylan Trenga who has accounted for 452 total yards of offense and has scored a third of the team’s total touchdowns. Also noteworthy is Luis Hernandez who has hauled in 356 yards receiving and averages 17 yards per reception.

Lincoln Hornets’ Junior running back Micah Edwards will do his best to out duel Trenga and lead his team to victory. The impressive underclassmen has rushed for 652 yards and six touchdowns this season while averaging an astounding 7.4 yards per touch. He is helped out by Senior receiver La tre Jacquess who has tallied a total of 492 receiving yards and has accounted for 74% of his team’s total aerial yards.

The game is takes place at Hilltop High School Friday night at 7 PM.
