Live coverage of National Signing Day Fall 2019 on Good Morning San Diego

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – It’s a huge day for high school athletes in San Diego! They’re set to declare where they’ll be playing collegiate sports.

KUSI’s Paul Rudy, Allie Wagner and Brandon Stone were live at Petco Park all morning speaking with dozens of excited athletes.

At 7:20 AM, we spoke with Carlsbad’s China Ray, a future Arizona Wildcat, Matthew from Otay Ranch who will be playing tennis at Creighton, Carlsbad’s Mackenzie Karnig who is headed to West Point to play volleyball.

15-minutes later, Steele Canyon’s Angelina Espinal told us about her decision to stay in San Diego and play soccer. Brandon Stone was with La Jolla Country Day’s Tehina Paopao who is heading North to play basketball, Allie Wagner was with Emmy going to Midland, Shyra to Boulder Colorado, and Emily who will be continuing her career at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Then we went back to Paul Rudy who was sitting with San Pasqual’s Jordan Engdahl who is going to play field hockey at UC Davis.

To end the 7:00 hour of Good Morning San Diego, Allie Wagner was with four soccer players Torrey Pines High’s Jillian Kaplan, who will be continuing her at Middle Tennessee State University, Canyon Crest Academy’s Sarah Koak who is headed to the University of Portland,  Torrey Pines High’s Jordan Rowl who is going to San Jose State University, and Grossmont’s Mia Foster who is going to Cal State Fullerton.

Next, Paul Rudy was with Kacey Bishop from West Hill’s High School. She is going to Fairfield to play her collegiate soccer. And Brandon Stone was with Wayne Moeck who is headed to the Colorado School of Mines. Then we went back to Paul Rudy who was joined by Abbey Frame from Rancho Buena Vista. She will be going from a longhorn to a California Berkeley Bear to play field hockey.

Then, Allie Wagner found another group of excited girls ready to continue their tennis careers at the college level. Belna Sepulveda is going from San Ysidro High School to Point Loma Nazarene University, Scripps Ranch High’s Carly Schwarzberg is headed to UC Davis, and Mt. Carmel’s Amanda Lestring is also going to Point Loma Nazarene University.

The 8am hour kicked off with Brandon’s interview of Foothills Christian basketball player Yassine Gharram, who was signing with Yale. Paul then ended the hour’s first segment when he chatted with two future collegiate softball players – Mission Bay’s Cheyenne Chavez (Utah State) and Cassidy West (Fresno State).

Paul was joined by Erin Burgess of Scripps Ranch (who will be attending Sacred Heart University for field hockey) and Sara Stone, attending Cal to also play field hockey. Allie was flanked by a flock of Torrey Pines Falcons who will be heading across the country for various sports. We then went back to Paul, who finished the segment with Vista’s Hayden Nightingale, who is attending UCLA to play water polo.

Paul kicked off the hour’s final segment by chatting with Grossmont’s Anthony Mata, who will be playing baseball at UC Riverside. Speaking of baseball, Brandon caught up with La Jolla Country Day’s EJ Kreutzmann, who will hit the diamond at Columbia. Allie met up with a large group of Mavericks from La Costa Canyon.

Paul began the 9am hour with Eastlake’s Lindsey Tarr, who will be heading to the Pacific Northwest and Oregon for acrobatics and tumbling. Brandon talked to Cathedral Catholic’s Mazatlan Harris, and found out she’ll be hooping it up for UC Davis. Allie chatted with a group of student athletes from Mission Hills to find out where they will be playing at the next level. Paul then finished with Westview’s Maegan Jensen, who signed with Northern Arizona for diving.

Carlsbad (and Occidental College-bound) softball player Megan Wilson joined Paul to kick off this segment. Allie was flanked by another contingent of athletes from all across the county. Paul chatted with real-life Mater Dei couple Alena Ramirez and Justin Carreon, who be attending George Washington University (softball) and Cal State San Marcos (soccer) respectively.

Paul finished his day with Scripps Ranch’s Zoee Lynch, who will hit the links for Vanguard. Brandon and Allie each had a multitude of athletes make their college intentions known before sending it back to the studio one final time.
