Local Agency Formation Commission votes to do away with Julian Cuyumaca Fire Department

JULIAN (KUSI) – The Julian Fire Department was the last volunteer fire department in San Diego County. Monday, the San Diego Local Agency Formation Commission voted to do away with it, and have the County Fire Authority take over.

The Local Agency Formation Commission is in charge of any change to local government boundaries, that includes the creation, and dissolution of special districts. It’s made up of local lawmakers, including County Supervisors Bill Horn and Dianne Jacob.

Back in April, The Julian Volunteer Fire Department filed a resolution to dissolve and cease operations.

The department says it didn’t have enough money or resources to continue. The Commission agreed and says having CAL FIRE take over is the best option for the people who live there. But many of those people are upset about the change.

They worry response times will be longer, because CAL FIRE stations are farther away. But, CAL FIRE reps say they shouldn’t worry.

They say a fire truck will be at one of the local fire stations through fire season, and an ambulance will be in Julian year round.

KUSI’s Anna Laurel has the details.
