Local GOP decides not to make endorsement after 50th Congressional District forum

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The Republican Party of San Diego County hosted a candidate forum Monday evening for the 50th Congressional District, after which they decided they will not be endorsing a candidate.

The forum, held at Town and Country Hotel, featured former Rep. Darrell Issa, Sen Brian Jones, R-Santee, former San Diego City Councilman Carl DeMaio and Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Alpine.

The candidates faced more than 1,000 voters and answered questions as they vied for the endorsement from the local GOP.

Indicted U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter was also at the forum to seek the endorsement of the local GOP for another term.

The 42-year-old lawmaker is charged with using campaign funds for personal expenses, ranging from groceries and bar tabs to family vacations.

Hunter has pleaded not guilty. His trial is scheduled to begin in January. He has called the charges politically motivated and has said he’s determined to keep the seat once held by his father.
