Local leaders unveil busway on El Cajon Boulevard

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – The city’s aggressive climate action plan was on display today at an event promising faster bus service along a major San Diego boulevard.

The boulevard now has a busway. We’ve talked a lot lately about dedicated bus lanes on our freeways as MTS and SANDAG move forward with their collective mantra that mass transit’s future is “now” if we’re going to address present and future gridlock. But here comes a dedicated lane on a city street: San Diego’s iconic El Cajon Boulevard. A three-mile stretch of the busy corridor between Park Boulevard and Fairmount.

Did we mention the lane allows for bicycle traffic? And if San Diego is to meet it’s goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50 percent by 2035, the transit option has to include a way to get you there faster. MTS’s 215 express route now includes that feature.

The partnership touted by Mayor Faulconer includes the businesses along the three mile stretch. Not only are the 215 bus rides free through January 17th, a number of businesses are offering a 10 percent discounts to promote the busway.
