Local politicians call for ban on oil drilling along California coast

SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – Congressional leaders on both sides of the country are pushing to pass a bill that would impose a permanent ban on offshore oil and gas drilling along California’s coast.

California Reps. Scott Peters, D-San Diego, and Mike Levin, D-Dana Point, have co-sponsored legislation aimed at blocking a Trump administration plan to sell new offshore oil leases in U.S. coastal waters.

The legislation says offshore oil drilling could endanger the region’s coastal economy.

The measure, HR 1941, is getting a hearing in the House of Representatives.
