Local Red Cross chapter ramping up tornado relief efforts
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – After a deadly outbreak of tornadoes in the south, the San Diego/Imperial County chapter of the American Red Cross is jumping headlong into the relief effort. They're sending Cruz Ponce, Manager of Community Response Program, who's on the red-eye to Alabama and will be on the ground by Friday morning.
Governor Robert Bentley of Alabama has activated National Guard troops to help in the devastated areas. Meanwhile, the closest Red Cross chapters to the outbreak area have already responded with workers, supplies and equipment.
Cruz Ponce is being deployed as a community partnerships supervisor. He will essentially be the Red Cross liaison with several other non-profits and other agencies trying to bring immediate help to this devastated region.
