Local restaurant owner charged with payroll fraud to be sentenced

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A San Diego restaurateur who hired college students and others, then refused to pay them or paid them less than minimum wage, was scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday.

David Dadon, 63, pleaded guilty to several felony charges, including grand theft of labor.

Authorities said Dadon victimized more than 20 servers and cooks for over a two-year period at State Street Grill in the College Area. The defendant refused to pay the workers after a week of work or offered them a wage that amounted to less than $5 per hour, according to authorities.

“(He) repeatedly took advantage of victims who were in desperate need of income,” District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis said.

State Street Grill closed in December 2012.
