Long-term San Diego Convention Center bookings are booming
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – San Diego Convention Center long-term bookings are thriving, well-ahead of last year’s pace, according to a report set to be presented Mar. 10 to the City Council’s Economic Development Committee. Long-term bookings are handled by the San Diego Tourism Authority sales staff and are for national conferences booked more than a year and a half out.
34 conventions had been booked for the convention center by the end of January 2016, according to the report. Just 13 conventions had been booked through January 2015. The future projections add up to attracting approximately 224,000 attendees to Downtown San Diego, with over 415,000 nights worth of hotel room bookings. The information gathered by the SDTA and convention center staff projects that 60 conventions will be booked during this fiscal year, which ends June 30.
Short-term deals — booked 18 month or less out — are down, however. 17 less short-term conferences have been book compared to 2015, according to the report. Attendance is still expected to reach around 140,000, with over 18,000 hotel room nights, reaching similar totals to last year.
