Madison 49, Point Loma 28
The rematch of the year turned out to be more of a repeat than a remix. Four-seed Madison pulled away in the second half of their Division I quarterfinal matchup with #5 Point Loma, posting a 49-28 win that followed much of the script from their Western League triumph two weeks ago.
In both contests, the Warhawks held a slim advantage through the midpoint of the game before turning up the heat in the home stretch.
While Silver Pigskin finalist Kareem Coles scored on a nine-yard scamper as time expired in the second quarter to give Madison a 21-7 lead at the break, Point Loma marched right back to open the third quarter. Jaylen Griffin capped a balanced and determined five-minute drive with a 10-yard touchdown run to tighten the margin to 21-14, and it looked like anybody’s ballgame.
Not for long. On the next play from scrimmage, the Madison offensive line parted the seas for Isaiah Osborne, who cruised to a lonely 80-yard score.
A fumble on the Pointers next possession gave Madison a short field, and Coles made sure the Warhawks took advantage as he covered the last five yards on a quarterback keeper. Osborne found the endzone next on a thunderous 17-yard score, and suddenly the Madhouse was sitting on a comfortable 42-14 advantage.
Osborne finished the night with 218 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Coles also found paydirt three times on the ground, to go with 185 yards and one more score through the air.
After losing their first three games, the Warhawks have now won eight in a row. They travel to #1 La Costa Canyon this coming Friday.
