Man being treated in emergency room ran away, then fell off cliff is rescued and returned

HILLCREST (KUSI) – A man who was being treated in the emergency room of UC San Diego Medical Center Hillcrest escaped today and fell off a nearby cliff, fire officials said.

Firefighters rescued the man and returned him to the hospital for treatment of a broken arm and leg.

At around 7:45 a.m. today, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department received a 911 call from the hospital’s ER room saying a man they were treating ran away, Battalion Chief Jeff Mitchell said.

The man fell from a cliff on Dickinson Street behind the hospital, Mitchell said. Firefighters arrived and searched the steep canyon, where they eventually found the injured man and took him back to the hospital.

There is no word on why he wanted to leave in the first place.
