Man brings grenade into LA hospital emergency room

WESTWOOD (CNS) – Someone brought a grenade into the Veterans
Administration West Los Angeles Medical Center Monday, prompting authorities to
evacuate it for about three hours until a bomb squad determined it was inert.

A 66-year-old man, reportedly a veteran known to hospital employees, was
being detained.

A bomb squad was sent to the hospital in the 11300 block of Wilshire
Boulevard about 7 a.m., said Sgt. Rich Pena of the Sheriff's Headquarters
Bureau.

About 10 a.m., explosives experts determined that the item was inert,
and the emergency room evacuation was discontinued, said sheriff's Sgt. Michael
Thomas.
