Man dead in car fire

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – Authorities released the name Friday of a 29-year-old man who died when his car crashed off a South Bay street and burst into flames, apparently during a speed contest with another motorist.

Kyung Jin Yoon of San Diego lost control of his Toyota Celica in the 1400 block of East Palomar Street in Chula Vista about 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to the county Medical Examiner's Office.

The coupe veered onto a center median, struck two trees and caught fire. A resident who heard the accident pulled Yoon from the wreckage, and paramedics tried in vain to save him before pronouncing him dead at the scene from blunt-force head injuries.

According to people in the area at the time, Yoon was speeding alongside another vehicle when the fatal wreck occurred, police Lt. Eric Thunberg said. The other motorist drove off following the crash.

The witnesses were unable to provide a description of the second vehicle, the lieutenant said.
