Man in wheelchair fatally struck by van

SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A man in a wheelchair was fatally struck by a van in the Midway District late Saturday night.

A van struck the man on Midway Drive near where it intersects West Point Loma and Sports Arena boulevards shortly after 9 p.m., San Diego police Sgt. Jorge Leon said.

The driver had been on West Point Loma Boulevard and stopped at a red light at Midway Drive, Leon said.

As he prepared to turn right onto Midway Drive, a 51-year-old man in a wheelchair entered the intersection in front of the van and was struck as the driver started his turn, Leon said.

The man, whose name was withheld, died at the scene, he said.

The body lay in the crosswalk on Midway Drive, and the wheelchair wedged beneath the van, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune.

“Jesus Christ is Lord” was printed on the side of the van, along with the website address Sam Kholi, according to the Union-Tribune. Websites associated with Kholi say he runs a payroll company, a trucking company called the Jesus Christ is Lord Travel Center, and Kholi Enterprises based at a facility on Hancock Street, not far from where the accident occurred, the newspaper reported.
