Man fatally injured in Escondido identified
SAN DIEGO (CNS) – A 59-year-old man fatally injured when a pickup truck hit him on an Escondido sidewalk was identified Tuesday.
Richard Hensley of Escondido was declared dead at Palomar Medical Center, Escondido police Lt. Justin Murphy said.
A westbound Chevrolet pickup veered off East Valley Parkway shortly before 5 a.m. Saturday, crashed into a telephone line junction box and struck Hensley on a sidewalk in the 2300 block of the road, police said.
A 17-year-old Valley Center boy fell asleep behind the wheel just prior to the fatal crash, according to a preliminary investigation. Though the truck overturned after running down the pedestrian, the motorist and his female passenger, also 17, were uninjured.
It was unclear if the boy would face charges over the crash. Intoxication was not believed to have been a factor, Murphy said.
